Chapel Hill launched Explore More at Pritchard Park, a new outdoor learning center and natural play area for kids and families near the Chapel Hill Public Library.
It was jointly developed by four city departments (parks, library, public works, fire) and UNC Institute for the Environment and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center to promote programs for environmental education and science learning where kids can choose their own adventure. Options include active activities like digging in the dirt, climbing around giant stumps, outdoor scavenger hunt, make a nature craft, look for birds or just walk in the woods.
Purchased in 1988 as a site for a public library, recreation, and open space, Pritchard Park has a well-used network of trails across its rolling, forested terrain. “Chapel Hill is fortunate to have this beautiful park land in the middle of town. It’s a terrific resource for STEAM learning and nature-based, experiential outdoor play,” says Meeghan Rosen, assistant library director and Explore More project manager. Project was funded by a mix of federal, state, local (Friends of Chapel Hill Library) support.
