Weddington of Matthews topped Northwood of Pittsboro 56-47 for the boys 3A high school basketball championship at Providence Grove HS. Second-seeded Weddington completed an undefeated season (18-0). Northwood, the 13 seed, finished 14-4. Weddington led 26-23 at halftime.
For the Chargers, Drake Powell had 15 points and 6 rebounds, Jarin Stevenson 13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, Frederico Whitaker 12 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds.
Earlier, the Chargers knocked off #4 Rocky Mount 53-46, #5 DH Conley 59-40, #1Terry Sanford 43-41 and #6 West Carteret 72-69. Stevenson netted 28, Powell 16, Whitaker 13 against West Carteret in the semis.
Northern Guilford bounced East Chapel Hill 77-44 in the opening round of the playoffs.
Northwood finished third (8-3) in Big Eight regular season. East Chapel Hill (7-2) was first, Southern Durham (6-2) second. Chapel Hill was 6-3, Vance 1-1, Cedar Ridge 3-4, Northern Durham 1-9, Orange 0-8.
Lady Chargers of Northwood, the #5 seed, fell to unbeaten Asheboro 54-44 in the 3A East Final in Pittsboro. It was their first and only loss. Northwood trailed 28-25 at halftime but scored only 5 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth. Te’Keyah Bland led Northwood with 13 points, with Rae McClarty and Myla Marve each adding ten. Earlier, Northwood defeated E.E. Smith 58-51 in the first round of playoffs followed by beating #4 Terry Sanford 46-43, #16 Person 49-37.
Asheboro, the seventh seed, eliminated Chapel Hill 65-48 in the first round of playoffs.
Northwood went 11-0 in Big East 3A regular season. Chapel Hill was next at 3-2, East Chapel Hill 1-2, Southern Durham 1-3, Orange 1-4, Cedar Ridge 0-1, Vance 0-1, Northern Durham 0-4.
