Women’s Soccer Repeats In Regionals

UNC rolled through the Greenville 12-team women’s soccer SE regional, claiming a fifth straight championship and advancing to the nationals in Arizona. Club soccer wom­en’s A, ranked #1 in Region 2, blanked Florida 3-0 (2-0 at half) in the finals, hosted by ECU.

Earlier, they went 3-0 in pool play (beating Virginia 3-1 UT Knoxville 4-0, Florida State 2-0) and earned a bye into the semis where they downed Virginia Tech 2-1.

Leading goal scorers for UNC were Grace Nipp and Olivia Holmes. UNC All-Tourna­ment players were Grace Nipp, Kenza Araba (also on 2016 all-tourney team) and Alexa Pibl (keep­er). Tournament MVP was Olivia Holmes.


UNC men’s soccer club, an at-large entry, was 3-0 in pool play in 16-team Greenville Regional (beating Georgia Tech 1-0, Ole Miss 2-0, Miami 5-1) before falling to Tennessee 2-1 in OT in quarters. N.C. State beat Vir­ginia on PKs for the championship. UNC finished second in regionals last year in Florida.
