Most weeks reading or not reading Parade magazine, a Sunday supplement to the News & Observer and others, doesn’t much matter. It’s usually focused on celebrity and entertainment, and if I miss it, no big deal. But the June 19 edition was different.
The cover story focused on the making of “Bull Durham,” the epic baseball film, and author/director Ron Shelton’s new book, “The Church of Baseball,” The book describes “home runs, bad calls, crazy fights, big swings and a hit.”
The problem was Parade wasn’t in my Sunday paper. And it wasn’t in the copies at the grocery either. My carrier hadn’t seen it, though it was part of the paper’s online edition.
I read the story on the magazine website and got angrier. Triangle readers liked the movie. Hell, a lot of it was filmed locally and they deserved to see the story about Shelton’s book. But the N&O screwed up.
I bought the book and look forward to reading it.
