Webb Simpson of Charlotte joined six other golfers in making the U.S. Open on the final qualifying day at Duke.
Some 84 golfers competed for seven slots at the 124th Open at Pinehurst. He shot a -4, 136 for the day with rounds of 67 and 69.
Duke Golf Club filled in for Old Chatham Golf Club (CSN, May 2024) on “golf’s longest day.” Top golfer in Durham was Frankie Capan III of N. Oaks, MN (-6, 134).
“This was very special for me because I love Pinehurst. I love No. 2. I really wanted to be here. I was able to get it done today, barely,” Simpson told NBC Sports. He was the 2012 Open champion and will play his 13th straight starting June 13.
