Ultimate Teams Struggle At Nationals

Three Triangle-based teams struggled at the USA ultimate club nationals in San Diego.

Ring of Fire of Raleigh, playing the 31st season and #5 seed, went 2-1 in pool play and 4-3 overall. They lost 15-6 in quarters to PONY. Jacob Fairfax and Andrew Juengst led the team with ten goals each for the tournament. Ben Dameron had 17 assists. Rhino Slam, the #7 seed from Portland, defeated PONY 15-6 for the championship.

Raleigh-Durham United of Raleigh, the #14 seed, was 1-6. Their win was 15-9 over Shrimp of Salt Lake, the #16 seed. Team leaders were Andrew Vande Berg (10 goals) and William Coffin (15 assists). Ring of Fire finished second and R/D United third at the SE regional championship at Bermuda Run, NC.

Phoenix, the #4 seed in the women’s bracket from Raleigh and SE regional champion at Bermuda Run, went 3-0 in pool play before losing 14-13 to Molly Brown of Denver and 15-13 to 6ixers of Toronto in the quarters and beating BENT of NYC 15-5. Team leaders were Lindsay Soo (10 goals) and Theresa Yu (10 assists). Fury of San Fran beat Scandal of Washington, DC, in the finals. They were the number one and two seeds.
