OWASA LAKES

OWASA lakes, University Lake in Carr­boro and Cane Creek in Chapel Hill, open for weekend recreation Saturday, March 28.

Cane Creek operates Friday-Saturday and University Lake Friday-Sunday. Hours are 6:30 to 6. Fees are charged. Remember to throw your Cane Creek fish back to avoid the PFAs.

On opening day (Lightning Brown Day) all lake fees, including entrance charge, boat, canoe or kayak rentals, are waived except for motor rentals.

In North Durham, Little River Lake, a city reservoir, on Orange Factory Road reopens March 13 for fishing/boat rentals/picnics. No swimming. Fees are charged. LR is open Fri-Mon 6:30 to 6 through early November. Lake Michie remains closed due to flooding damage from Chantal last summer.

BOWHUNTERS CHALLENGE

Frogman (3D) Bowhunters Challenge takes place March 21 at 10 a.m. in Jackson­ville for adults 17+ and kids 8-16. Use  runsignup.com to register.

GOPC FILM FEST

The GOPC Film Fest will be held Feb. 25-26 at 7 p.m. at The Rialto, Raleigh. Doors open at 6. Night one, Feb. 25,  features Moun­tainFilm on Tour Films involving skiing, moun­tain biking, surfing and screening of “Best Day Ever.” Night 2, Feb. 26, is the Fly Fishing Film Tour. THE LAST RODEO

Webster’s Rock the Hill indoor climbing competition, this year called The Last Rodeo, will be held March 13-15 at the Chapel Hill Community Center. It will be the 37th edition, longest running event of its kind in the country, and the final one on the original  wall before it is replaced. The wall covers more than 5,000 sq. ft. of rock, wood, bolts, holds, with 40 routes.

Registration is under way. Climbers complete the route March 13 (9am-3pm) or (March 14, 9-3 or 3-9) at the Community Center. Top three scorers in each division advance to March 15 finals starting at 2 p.m. Five divisions are offered: youth, recreational, intermediate, open, adaptive. Limited to 120 climb­ers.
