Here are some general winter sledding safety tips including several from the National Safety Council:
Find gentle, open slopes that are free of trees, fences, rocks, poles and roads and have a flat area at the bottom to stop.
Avoid icy conditions, as hard-packed snow or ice “dramatically increases speed and loss of control,” which can lead to injuries.
Use steerable sleds or tubes specifically designed for snow. Use a bike or ski helmet to significantly reduce the risk of head injury,
Always sled sitting down with feet pointing downhill; never head-first. Limit one rider at a time to avoid collisions.
Adults should be around to supervise younger sledders.
