Durham’s downtown skate park on Rigsbee Ave. built 16 years ago earned a $1.2M upgrade from the city. The renovations and safety update are expected to take up to two years. The project received over 16,000 votes in the participatory budget process that solicits ideas from residents, reviews them and finds support. The refresh for the skate park was proposed each year since the PB started. Other projects approved were a playground at Bethesda Park and a downtown outdoor bathroom.
Chapel Hill’s Homestead skate park received an upgrade last fall that sparked an increase in skaters/boarders.
