On July 4, anyone in North Carolina–residents or visitors–can fish for free in all public waters, including coastal waters, from midnight until 11:59 p.m., without needing a state fishing license. All other fishing regs apply, such as length and daily possession limit.
A license is required for all fishers 16 and older on all other days.
Fishing Pier Repaired
The fishing pier at University Lake, Carrboro, was repaired and rebuilt following damage from Chantal last summer. The lake operates Friday-Sunday 6:30-6, for fishing and boating (no gas engines), and will be open holidays Juneteenth, July 4 and Labor Day.
Lake Michie Closed
Durham’s Lake Michie closed June 5 due to low water levels. They will reopen for fishing and boating when the lake level rises to a safe level, city officials said.
