HUNTERS HONORED
Two local hunters were honored at the Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh for prize-winning deer taken in Chatham and Orange County last year.
Corey Frye’s Chatham Co. buck, scored at 156 6/8, won Best By Bow N.C. Non Typical Male Award. Megan Seevers won Best By Muzzeloader N.C. Typical Female Award for her Orange County buck, scored at 140 3/8.
BODY RECOVERED
Chatham County authorities recovered the body of a Chapel Hill man from Jordan Lake near the NC 751 bridge last month. The body was identified as David Schultz, 24. An investigation continues.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
Raleigh’s Lake Wheeler offers learn the fishing basics for adults Aug. 1, 9-11:30 a.m., family fishing instruction July 11 and Aug. 8. Classes are $10 each. Register at WebTrac/ Raleigh. Lake’s open Juneteenth and July 4.
JORDAN CLEANUP
Jordan Lake SRA holds a summer cleanup Sunday, June 28, 6-8 p.m. at Seaforth swim beach and is looking for volunteers to help collect trash prior to the holiday weekend. If you plan to attend, email halle.talcott @ncparks.gov (preferred, not required).
DROUGHT CONDITIONS
Orange/Durham/Chatham/Wake counties are facing extreme drought conditions (57.2 percent of state) in early June, 36.2 percent extreme drought, 6.2 moderate drought.
OWASA Water Watch reported local reservoirs were 81 percent full June 1, despite limited rainfall.
FISHING FESTIVAL
The Fintastic Fishing Festival will be held Saturday, June 13, at the Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville, as part of the National Fishing & Boating Week celebration. Families with children 15 and younger are invited to enjoy a full day of fishing fun, hands-on learning and outdoor adventure.
With over 12 interactive exhibits and demonstrations, this is a good way to learn about fishing and the role anglers play in conserving North Carolina’s fisheries.
