Population Shifts In Triangle Area

According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Chapel Hill grew 2.1 percent to 63.6K from 2024 to June 30, 2025. Car­rboro lost 1.5 percent to 21K, Pittsboro grew 11.3 percent to 5,100; Hillsborough was up 1.3 percent to 9,800.

Wendell in Wake County was the fastest growing town (17.3 percent) in the state and doubled to 19,687 last year. Nine of the 15 fastest growing  N.C. towns were in the Tri­angle. Seven were in Wake.

Durham added about 4,700 residents last year. At 305,561 it’s the fourth largest city in the state behind Greensboro (308,667), Ral­eigh (596,306), Charlotte (964,784). Char­lotte gained 20,731 residents, the most of any city in the country.

Following Hurricane Helene, Asheville had 1,626 fewer residents, the biggest decline re­ported in the state.
