HOLIDAY FISHING

OWSA Lakes will be open regular hours Labor Day, the final summer holiday.

University Lake, Carrboro, operates  6:30 to 6 Friday through Sunday, and Cane Creek, Chapel Hill, 6:30 to 6 Friday/Saturday through Halloween. Daily fees are charged. Catch and release fish caught at Cane Creek due to high count PFAs.

In Durham, Little River remains closed due to low water level. Lake Michie did not open for the season due to storm damage from July 2025.

HOLIDAY SAFETY

State wildlife officers are hoping for a safe and quiet Labor Day weekend. The July 4 weekend Operation Dry Water removed 29 impaired boaters from the water and investigated a teen drowning at Jordan Lake. NCWRC said they deployed 164 officers, contacted 1,340 vessels,  issued 475 boating citations and 722 warnings.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

N.C. representatives in Congress voted 11-3 to support making daylight savings time permanent. Reps. Foushee, Ross, Harrigan voted no. The measure passed the House by a 308-117 margin.

LEARN TO SKATE

Orange Co. Sportsplex, Hillsborough, has fall learn to skate classes. One section (Wednesday), 7 sessions starts Aug. 26; another (Saturday) starts Aug. 22, 7 sessions. An $18.50 annual membership for U.S. Figure Skating is required plus class fees. Call 919-644-0339 ext. 227 for information.

DROUGHT IMPACT EASED

Late July storms brought strong rainstorms and boosted water levels at Falls Lake in Raleigh, Jordan Lake in Chatham and OWASA reservoirs. The storms bypassed Durham but the Bull City is tapping Teer Quarry in Durhan, Jordan Lake via Cary and OWASA via pipeline (up to 3M gallons per day since July 20).

OWASA Water Watch said reservoirs in Chapel Hill were 76.3 percent full 8/12.
