County Awaits Soccer Park Bids

Orange County wants to sell 45 acres in north Chapel Hill for a non-profit operated and run field sports complex, presumably soccer (CSN, August 26). Bids for the Millhouse Road property are due Sep. 18.

“We have fielded some questions from groups who sound like they are preparing offers/proposals,” the county rec director told CSN.

The leading candidate is NC FC of Raleigh, a well-regarded youth soccer provider. Steve Malik is the head of NCFC and owns the N.C. Courage women’s pro team. He’s been in the news lately regarding the need for expanded practice and game facilities for the Courage. He gave a six-month timetable to sort out the issues.

The new fields would provide private and public use, the county said, and there would be deed restrictions to guarantee continued field use. There is no water or sewer at the property but it’s across the street.
