Golf Major Part Of South Village At Chatham Park

Golf will be a big part of the 5,000-acre South Village development at Chatham Park, Pittsboro.

Southern Land Co., a Nashville developer, is working with golf course architect Tom Fazio of Hendersonville to design a 1,271-acre master planned golf community and private golf club.

The project will include an 18-hole golf course, a 9-hole short course and a state of the art learning and practice facility.

“Our goal is to create a course that is visually spectacular, fun to play and deeply connected to the natural character of the land.” Fazio said a press statement. His design firm did the 1999 upgrade at Finley GC at UNC.

The North Village community is under construction now, near the US64/15-501 intersection north of Pittsboro.

The land for the golf community (South Village) is south of Roberson Creek and is also some of Chatham Park’s most environmentally sensitive, with 324 acres of stream buffers and areas of significant steep slopes. That has generated a lot of concern and criticism from residents, as well as a lawsuit seeking more safeguards. A Chatham County Superior Court judge dismissed the lawsuit in September, but an appeal is still possible, the N&O reported.
