Golf News: Griffin Selected For Ryder Cup

Ben Griffin of Chapel Hill is the second former UNC golfer to play for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Davis Love III did it six times.

The U.S. battles Team Europe in the 45th edition, a three-day event Sep. 26-28, at Bethpage Black, a public course in a state park on Long Island. NBC, Golf Channel, USA Network will broadcast the Ryder Cup. The event draws large boisterous, enthusiastic crowds who cheer wildly like at a football game, and big TV numbers.

On Friday/Saturday there are two sessions of 4 fourball matches and 4 foursomes matches. U.S. team pairings are set by the captain (Keegan Bradley) and the lineup can be adjusted daily. On Sunday there are 12 singles matches.

Griffin, 29, was selected as a captain’s pick after a strong season. Griffin, who quit pro golf and took a 9-to-5 job during Covid, won twice this year and moved from No. 65 to No. 17 in the world. He ranked No. 8 in the Ryder Cup point standings. He had eight top 10s this season and has finished inside the top 15 the last 10 times he’s made the cut, USAToday reported.
