Leave The Rattlers Alone In The Woods

The NC Wildlife Commission said they’ve been receiving photos of people killing rattlesnakes and it’s pretty clear that some folks need some education.

Not only is it dangerous to attempt to kill a snake, in some cases it’s illegal. Ten out of our 38 native snakes in NC are listed species. This includes all three of our rattlesnakes: Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake and the Timber Rattlesnake.

These snakes are protected by the state and cannot be harmed, harassed or relocated without an Endangered Species Permit obtained from the Wildlife Commission.

Do yourself a favor, WRC said,  if you see a rattlesnake, admire it from a safe distance and let it go on its merry way. That way, you’ll be safe from the bitey parts and also from a visit from a wildlife officer.
