The Durham City Council is not going to make it easier to kill deer in Treyburn with bows and arrows.
State biologists say there are at least three times as many deer (70-80 per sq mile) in the neighborhood as the land can support, but the City Council did not want to set a precedent since they would apply citywide, the Herald-Sun reported.
Durham does not take part in the state’s urban archery program (Chapel Hill, Clayton, Wake Forest do) but allows deer hunting via archery only on a minimum 5-acre lots and no buildings within 250 yards. Changes to 2-acre lots and 60-yard distances were turned down by the council. The matter goes to the Environmental Affairs Board for advice, the mayor said.
