North Carolina has ten public shooting ranges for hunters and shooters.
Two are near the Triangle—R. Wayne Bailey Casewell Shooting Range in Yanceyville, 35 miles north of Chapel Hill, and Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center in Apex. They are free but have different features, requirements, hours.
Caswell range, 3670 NC 86S, Yanceyville, 336-402-0684, has pistol, rifle and 3-D archery ranges. Range passes can be obtained on-site after the proper safety briefings.
Features include 100-yard rifle range with five shooting stations; roaming archery course with 10 separate 3D targets; 25-yard pistol range with five shooting stations. Hours are Wednesday-Saturday 8:30-5, Sunday 12-5.
Wake County range, 3921 Holly Springs Apex Rd., Apex. Hours are Monday and Friday 5-9 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 9-7. Closed for maintenance in August.
Shooters are required to make reservations before going to this range. Reservations can be made through NC Wildlife’s Lane Reservations portal at ncwildlife.org. Features include 100-meter rifle range; 50-meter multi-use range; 50-meter pistol-only range. Indoor range but not temperature controlled. They also offer pistol classes with information posted 5 days before class starts. They are very popular and fill up quickly.
This is an age-restricted facility. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to shoot. Shooters 12 to 17 years of age must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian, and must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.
