Chapel Hill’s Penny For Parks program is helping the town catch up on recreation construction. Two projects in particular are getting major help–the long-awaited Cedar Falls tennis court renovation and Homestead skatepark replacement.
The town budgeted $976,000 for PFP for the 24-25 fiscal year and spent $958,144 on 15 projects during the first six months (through December) of the budget year.
Largest items were $469,411 for Cedar Falls tennis project (part of $1.5M total cost), parks and rec master plan $228,582, Homestead skatepark replacement $78,797. The tennis and skatepark monies will be spent during this calendar year. Smallest item ($838) was for athletic field supplies.
Unusual items were $15,460 for kiln replacement at Community Center Clay Studio, and $2,500 kiln installation. These were due to unanticipated damage and insurance should reimburse costs, the city said.
Here are the rest of the projects and amount spent: AD Clark pool liner $64,576, Community Center Park environmental assessment $8,941, skatepark design $12,300, outdoor AED installations at multiple parks $12,569, fencing supplies $3,000, bridge repair supplies $5,000, electrical supplies $2,000, Teen Center security equipment & installation $39,652, Hargraves tennis courts project $14,517.
